Retired Teachers Join Chula Vista Public Library Foundation Board of Directors

Recently the Chula Vista Public Library created a non-profit, charitable Foundation for the purpose of helping raise additional monies from the community and to get area business professionals, philanthropists, and community members more involved with the Library Department and its vital community programs.

Since the inception of the Foundation, Library Director David Palmer has been busy recruiting remarkable individuals to the board. As chance would have it, several retired teachers, all with distinguished careers with the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD), recently agreed to serve on the board.

Individuals recently elected to the board include Frances (Fran) Cornell, Terry Cleary, Karen Myers, and Dency Souval.

Fran Cornell is a retired arts and humanities educator whose teaching experience covers K - post graduate. Fran is currently vice chair of the Chula Vista Cultural Arts Commission, vice president of the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center, and a member of the second Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the Bayfront Development Project.

Terry Cleary spent much of her career as a classroom teacher within the CVESD. Before retirement, Terry left the classroom to serve the district as a program director.

Karen Myers spent her CVESD career teaching 2nd through 6th grade with an expertise in reading and communication skills. Karen also possesses a strong background in literacy programs.

Prior to her retirement from teaching, Dency Souval spent 27 years as an arts specialist within the CVESD. Dency was also one of the founding members of the City’s Cultural Arts Commission and currently serves as Chula Vista’s representative to the Unified Port of San Diego’s Public Art Committee.

The Library Department will face many funding challenges in the future and with those challenges there will be opportunities for philanthropic support from all sectors of the community. Funds raised by the new Foundation will be used for making additions to the Library’s collections, as well as for promotion and development of arts and culture in the Chula Vista community. Contributions of any size are welcome. Checks can be sent to: Chula Vista Public Library Foundation, 365 F Street, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Contributions are tax-deductible for those who itemize.

If you, or someone you know is interested in serving on the Board of Directors, please contact Roderick Reinhart, Asst. Library Director, at (619) 691-5070.
